COVID-19 jobs tracker: Experts are predicting massive job losses following the pandemic
As we are nearing the end of our second week of Lockdown, panic as subsided and evolved into realistic and plan-for-the-future questions. It’s an unprecedented time for individuals and businesses as lockdowns around the world have forced companies to scale back or shut down operations and temporarily lay off/retrench workers. Meanwhile, some companies are grappling with a surge in demand that was unthinkable just a few months ago.
I read an article by Business Insider : The United Nations just said that coronavirus could wipe out the equivalent of 195 million jobs worldwide, and my heart skipped a beat as I realised that we lack a source of truth where professionals can go and find out which organisations are retrenching and who are still hiring in this current economic climate.
The workforce reduction process is inherently secretive and plagued with rumours. Companies release little or no details while planning such resource actions. On the other hand, the lives of each of us may be greatly impacted by these top-secret decisions - hence all the anxiety that workers may experience.
According to Bloomberg "South African companies have already announced thousands of job cuts. In a country where a third of the labor force is already unemployed, this will put even more strain on demand and economic growth. The article also exclaimed that these job losses will add to an unemployment rate that is the highest in at least 11 years, and place a further damper on demand and consumption spending in an economy stuck in the longest downward cycle since World War II.
